A Saturday in the reuse shop

Shop days are part market, part mission—customers leave with furniture, and the charity gains income that backstops free starter packs.

← News & impact

Saturday in the Dumfries shop has its own pace. Early browsers look for bookshelves and kids’ beds before they go. Later, someone collects the dining table they reserved mid-week. Staff and volunteers shift pieces carefully—because a scratched leg becomes unsellable, and waste defeats the point.

Customers are not always “charity supporters” in the obvious sense. Many are private landlords, young couples, or families refurnishing after a fire or separation. They want fair prices and decent quality. SHAX meets them where they are.

Every purchase in the shop helps a big, kindly operation keep going: the warehouse, transport, utilities, and—the reason this fundraising site exists—the stock that goes into Emergency Home Starter Packs when referrals arrive.

Donations matter as much as purchases. The charity needs clean, complete items it can stand behind. A stained mattress or broken TV costs time to dispose of and pulls volunteers away from pack prep.

If you have cleared a house or upgraded a kitchen, check what SHAX can accept on shax.org.uk. If you would rather give money than haul a wardrobe, call to give and mention you want it toward packs or reuse—staff will note it.
