Submitting a partner referral

From the partner side: a referral through the system is often the last task on a frantic move-in list—and only works if the pack is really free and really ready.

← News & impact

Perspective from a referring professional; details composite and anonymised.

My week is deadlines: inspections, arrears meetings, mutual exchanges, and the occasional win when someone finally gets offered a tenancy. The bit that keeps me awake is the gap between “here are your keys” and “you can live here.”

I have stood in flats with single mothers counting sockets and none of them plugged into anything useful. I have seen care leavers pretend they are fine because asking for help feels like proving they cannot cope.

When I submit a referral to SHAX through our partner pathway, I need three things: no charge to the client, a realistic delivery window, and no lecture attached. People arrive ashamed already.

Referrals are not a favour SHAX owes my organisation—they are a shared standard for how Dumfries & Galloway treats people in transition. When packs are underfunded, referrals still happen, but the conversations get harder. I explain delays I cannot fix.

That is why I tell local employers to look at sponsorship. It is visible, practical, and understood by clients who notice which businesses fund community work.

Individuals can help too: give by phone, ask about Gift Aid, and treat pack costs as real—because on my side of the desk, they are.
